CONTENT
The focus is on dealing with the packaged object, the packaging as object, the graphic treatment of the surface and to work in small interdisciplinary teams. The most important criteria that must be fulfilled by the packaging will be developed in the first two weeks in short exercises and discussed in the group from the perspective of their own areas of specialization. Accompanying introductions that will take place include: manufacturing possibilities, inputs on prototypes, typography and graphic elements and field trips.
Individual project plans – in interdisciplinary groups of two – are formulated verbally and graphically throughout the course and visualised in models. In individual discussions with the lecturers and in exchange with the other students the project plan will be examined and honed. The result of the development process will be a model or prototype (precise choice of material) of the packaging, including the graphic design of the surface and the contents of the box. The model/prototype should be exemplary of all the relevant questions about content and design.
In discussion with the lecturers the students should find an appropriate display situation, which is then realised and documented. The documentation takes the form of a series of photographs that explain the functions of the object.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The students develop a graphic surface for a package /an object taking into consideration the functional criteria of packaging design.
They are able to apply typography and graphic elements specifically to packaging and document their project photographically. They learn by doing short exercises, applied project work (in the form of sketches, 3D sketches, prototypes and material experiments). They guide and push their creative process forward through group-discussions. They can evaluate their work and therefore fulfil the criteria.
In interdisciplinary groups of two, the students develop a context specific project idea. They know their qualities and skills and can pass on their expertise to fellow students. The students are able to make decisions independently.
