Modultype: elective module
Modul ID: DK.BA_+FO_SBD.25
ECTS: 3
Competences: Material & Practice
Duration/Contact study
September 1 – 12, 2025
Lecture(s): Nadine Spengler, Marco Backer
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Basic knowledge of screen printing techniques is taught and various stitching techniques for sketchbooks and books are introduced and applied. Successful completion of the module entitles the student to use the screen printing workshop independently, in each case in consultation with the workshop manager.
CONTENT
Students receive technical introductions in theory and practice with the medium of screen printing and bookbinding.
In the first week, a design for a cover is implemented creatively and the possibilities of screen printing technology (color application, overprinting) are discovered and tried out. The artwork and color separations are produced by hand or digitally and printed in two colors.
In the second week, the printed covers are then hand-made into sketchbooks, bound books, and face boxes in a variety of stitching styles (single-ply and multi-ply brochures, butterfly stitching, stitching on ribbon and cardstock).
Finally, the work is presented and discussed in plenary.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

RECORD
The students were introduced to the theory and practice of screen printing and bookbinding. Various covers for sketchbooks, books and cardboard were implemented in terms of design and illustration. The artwork and color separations were converted by hand or digitally and printed in two colors. Subsequently, the covers were further processed into sketchbooks, books and cardboard boxes (single-ply/multi-ply brochures, butterfly stitching, stitching on tape and faceplates).
