LEARNING OBJECTIVE
Students will be introduced to the theory and practice of shaped knitting on the Passap Duomatic 80 hand knitting machine. The course provides insights into the cultural-historical aspects of shaped knitting and exercises (basic acquisition) on various shaping techniques in knitting as well as an overview of the versatile world of knitting around the globe. The course can serve as an extension of existing knitting knowledge or as an introduction to the respective technique. Technical know-how, exploring yarn qualities, and design issues can be systematically experienced through practical work.
Students maintain a sample book, which serves them for learning control, reproduction, and further development of knitting patterns and thus becomes their personal working tool.
CONTENT
Learning methods of shaping 2D and 3D knitted fabrics, exploring different techniques through practical work on the hand knitting machine. Basics of shaping are taught (increasing and decreasing, formulas for polygons and circular segments, and tubular knitting). The insights and exercises are recorded in a sample book.
The first week is an introduction to the technique, the second week can be used for implementation. Cultural-historical insights into past and current positions expand and complement the horizon on the subject.

RECORD
Students gained initial (beginners) or advanced (advanced) insights into shaped knitting and acquired a repertoire of shaped knitting. The key knitting techniques for shaping knitted fabrics were recorded in a sample book. The module consisted of one week of introduction and one week of implementation. Students gained awareness of the interplay between materiality and design of the respective technique and construction. They gained cultural-historical insights into knitting and design in the fields of fashion, interior design, art, medicine, and technology.
