In the colder seasons, urban spaces usually remain unused. The Therm° project therefore proposes an interim use for the ‘Inseli’ in Lucerne that provides visitors with warmth: from a warm footbath to a pop-up sauna.
Project in the Space 2 module, 2023 Student: Mirja Di Giacinto, Lea Schir The ‘Inseli’ in the centre of Lucerne is a beautiful place right on the lake - on the one hand. On the other hand, it was used as a car park until recently. The city of Lucerne is now looking for an interim use for this car park. The project aimed to develop design concepts and strategies for the short-term and/or longer-term interim use of the ‘Inseli’ in consultation with the stakeholder groups involved. Augmented reality was used as a tool for designing the public space and as a visualisation and communication medium to present the design proposals on site at the ‘Inseli’. The project envisages utilising the space between the Lucerne autumn fair and the Christmas market and focuses on giving people an incentive to go outside even in the cold season. The elements of fire and water, which are used in various elements - from low-threshold warm footbaths to pop-up saunas and hot pots - serve this purpose.
