PROCESS / CHALLENGES
We have seen so many creative and unique packaging from the company, which encouraged us to gather our craziest ideas and start to experiment with unusual shapes, colors and patterns in order to design an extraordinary shoe package for the Nike Run Free 3 lines. But it wasn’t the only goal that we wanted to achieve.
The box has a second purpose. It may be stacked together with multiple boxes to create a shoe shelf. The combinations allow you to create a shelf and arrange, stack and organize your shoes, as you like.
We used symmetric shapes just as triangles and parallelograms to create a pattern what we used to cover the inner side of the box. The box outside is completely white to avoid the irritating effect of too many color combinations.
You can find the necessary information on a sticker at the bottom of the box but the sticker can be easily removed in order to get an entirely white surface. When you’re creating your shoe shelf it could happen that you have to rotate the boxes and the sticker can be seen at the bottom. Although, it’s very important to display it on the box to make the storage and sales manageable, you can take it off with a quick movement.
Since we didn’t want to stay at the usual form of a shoebox, the most difficult part of our project was to design a complex shape, from which we can build a system. We started to experiment with geometric shapes but we tried to avoid making a totally symmetric form. We made at least a dozen prototypes till we found the most appropriate form.
During the whole experimental process we used white cardboard with the thickness of 15mm to make prototypes. It was a great experience to use the plotter machine, which made our work much easier.
For the final exhibition we made 3 prototypes to show how the boxes could be stacked. We displayed the boxes surrounded by colorful straws to emphasize the main colors of the pattern and the playfulness of the boxes.
GROUP WORK
As equal members of the group we found it very important to listen to each other carefully and elicit the other member’s ideas. We were always opened to new ideas and diverse viewpoints, which lead us to a successful collaboration.
