Starting Point and Research
How much or how little is needed, to make a packaging series work? How is each object appropriately packaged and how does it become part of the series? How different or uniform can a packaging series be?
The results of the development process are models and prototypes of packagings, including graphic arrangements. The project is realized in a group of three.
The three objects of our packaging series are:
– Tea infuser: An object, which doesn’t need any protection, for example only a banderole.
– Tea cup: An object, which is fragile and needs good protection.
– Tea leaves: An object, which is in several parts and needs to be held together.
For our chosen objects, we searched for an appropriate packaging concept. We created our own brand, which we named Teegon. We imagined that our product collection would be sold in a Teashop in Lucerne, which sells all kinds of tea products from different brands. The shop focuses on a variety of products, such as teapots, teacups or tea blends, of higher and also more affordable price ranges. It is a shop for the young and the old and it aims on providing the tea lovers with everything they desire in one place. During our research we concentrated on different aspects connected with tea, such as tradition, lightness, nature and pureness. We were very inspired by the traditional Asian basket weaving, which has a distinct hexagonal pattern.
Work Process
In order to develope our packaging series we experimented with different materials, for instance wood, origami paper and different kinds of cardboard. We then chose a thin brown and white cardboard, because of its modern and natural character. For the three objects we needed to find packagings, which related to each other and demonstrated a consistency in design. We then tried different techniques to construct the box for the teacup, tea leaves and tea infuser. Questions that came up were: How should the box opening work? How much cardboard is needed? Should some parts be left open? What will distinguish our packaging from others? As a solution we defined two characteristic elements, the hexagon as a basic shape and the weaving as the closure system. Simultaneously we worked on a proper graphic design. We created our own Logo, which we could then apply to all three packagings. We experimented with cutout patterns, colored surfaces, font styles and sizes and pictograms. We achieved to unify our various ideas into one simple minimalistic design concept. The construction was completed with the cutting plotter and graphics were realized with screen-printing. Throughout the project we harmonized very well in the group and always tried to work efficiently and in an effective structured way. We made certain that the harmony in the group was there and teamwork was very important for us. Furthermore, we got to know a new side of product design and learned a lot about three-dimensional constructing and about how much is needed for a packaging series.
Presentation
For the final presentation we displayed the key results of our process and the finished end products. We referred to our working process and to our most important trains of thought. Additionally, we presented photographs, documenting this process and the final product.
