Definition and characteristics of immersive technologies

To immerse oneself means to delve into something. In the context of this program, “immersive” refers to:

  • the effect that virtual, fictitious worlds and simulations have on us.
  • that our perception of the real world is increasingly diminishing, while we identify more and more with the digitally created «illusory world». 

Immersive technologies include (serious) games, augmented and virtual reality, simulations and immersive media production. These technologies appeal to the visual, auditory and haptic senses and merge the physical world with digitally enhanced or simulated reality.

 

Potentials and applications

The times of immersive technologies as niche products - ranging from Snapchat filters to funny marketing stunts to entertaining games - are over. They have found their way into the mainstream. For companies, this merger of reality and virtuality offers great potential, including optimizing processes, increasing productivity (repairs, maintenance, construction, plant manufacturing, etc.), realistic training environments, targeted customer approach and optimized experience, three-dimensional visualization of data in architecture/design, healthcare applications (treatment of psychosis and phobias, therapy for stroke patients), and so on. The Bachelor of Science in Immersive Technologies, which is the only study program in Switzerland that focuses on the design and realization of immersive experiences, offers many opportunities to its students.

  • After graduation, you will have the qualification to work as a specialist in the immersive tech sector which comes with exciting career options in Switzerland and abroad.
  • “Learning by doing” is one of the core tenets of our curriculum. By working on real-life projects, our students gain valuable practical experience even while they study.
  • The predominant language in the IT sector is English. That is why the degree program is taught in English. You will be best prepared for your future career.
  • Through our collaboration with international companies (e.g., in project modules) and with international partner universities – be it in summer schools, semesters abroad, jointly organized modules in which students collaborate remotely in mixed teams (a common occurrence in real life) – you will already gain extensive international experience and intercultural skills during your studies.

Graduate profile

This BSc program teaches deep specialist skills and knowledge in the fields of augmented and virtual reality, (serious) games, 3D modelling, human-computer interaction and immersive media production as well as a solid understanding of key adjacent fields (e.g., agile project management, usability/user experience, psychology). Graduates have the skills to design and develop immersive applications for various sectors and to apply the knowledge acquired in practice. 

Field of activity

Graduates have the qualifications to start a career in a wide range of professional fields. Notably, these include corporate research and development divisions, educational institutions, research labs, and agencies. Your expertise will allow you to:

  • design interactive learning applications
  • effect behavioral changes with simulations and serious games
  • create solid decision-making bases in complex systems using innovative visualization techniques
  • use the virtualization of new products for validation
  • minimize the need for costly prototypes
  • use immersive technologies to accelerate the development process

Exemplary fields of application for these skills range across industries and include rail traffic, the automotive industry, the consumer goods sector, the chemical and healthcare sectors, architecture, energy, and education.

 
Admission
  • Vocational training with a vocational baccalaureate. In the case of a non-technical degree/training, it may be necessary to complete preparatory courses in mathematics and/or computer science (decision of the head of degree program).
  • High school diploma plus one year of professional experience in the technical or digital design field.
  • Graduates of international schools who also have at least one year of qualified professional experience in an IT or digital design-related field.
  • Comparable foreign qualifications, supplemented by at least one year of qualified professional experience in an IT or digital design-related field.
  • If you are not a native speaker of English, you must provide proof of English language proficiency (B2 and above). In case of doubt, the head of degree program will decide after an admissions interview.

Requirements for our students' private laptops 
During your studies, you will work intensively with industry-standard game engines, modeling software and other tools that require a certain amount of computing power. We therefore give the following recommendations to students regarding the purchase of private laptops: 

  • Processor:  Minimum - Core i5 or Ryzen 5; Recommended - see minimum requirement or above  
  • Operating System: Minimum - Win 10; Recommended - Win 11 
  • Memory: Minimum - 16GB; Recommended - 32GB 
  • GPU:  Minimum - GPU 4GB; Recommended - GPU 8GB  
  • Storage:  Minimum - 1TB; Recommended - 2TB   
  • Display:  Minimum - 1920x1080; Recommended - see minimum requirement or above   
  • Network: Minimum - Wlan
  • Sound: Minimum - onboard
  • Ports:  Minimum - USB 3.2+DP Port

Please note that Apple devices are currently not optimal for our field of activity (limitations regarding VR compatibility, 3D reconstruction software, etc.). We therefore advise you to use other options.

Federal government supports augmented reality research project at HSLU

AR makes urban and community planning more accessible to the general public. In an Innosuisse project, HSLU researchers are exploring the potential of the technology together with the city of Lucerne and the companies Planteam S AG and Sinus AG.
