ECTS: 3.
Competences: Digitality, Material & Practice
Duration/Contact study
2. – 13. September 2024

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Our goals are to improve data research skills through better awareness of data sources. The students of this module learn to work with several different kinds of data, to interpret and to classify them within the respective contexts, to analyse and contribute to digitally structured information, and use this meaningfully in their own work.
CONTENT
Data plays a crucial role in the working processes of modern design and art - be it in the context of preliminary research, as source material for production, in the evaluation of results, or in reaching the audience. Data literacy encompasses the “the ability to collect, manage, evaluate, and apply data, in a critical manner” (Ridsdale et al 2015). The module will build experience and student confidence in beginning to work with data, using established methodology, such as the Data Pipeline and Data Skills Framework. There will be a compact e-library available with recommended readings, example datasets, freely downloadable tools, and a number of practice worksheets and quizzes.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Module in English
ASSESSED ASSIGNMENT(S)
Prerequisite is at least 80% attendance and active participation in the module: research, reflection, reproducibility, and artistic potential
GRADING OF ASSESSED ASSIGNMENT(S)
Grading will be assessed according to the following criteria:
1. Research comprehensiveness
2. Transfer between practice and theory
3. Conceptual quality of the project
4. Creative & technical quality of implementation
RECORD
The students have learned what data literacy means, they have acquired the relevant competences and applied them in the form of a self-selected research project tailored to their own subject area.
