CONTENT
The introduction week, which includes different inputs (talks, lectures, film screenings, field trips, etc.) will be used for orientation, mutual discovery and the transmission of knowledge on the selected focal point of the module topic (see module programme)
The second week is a development from this basis and the students – as part of an interdisciplinary team- will develop their own questions on the topic, which will then be incorporated into a creative/artistic work (they have free choice of what media to use).
The work will be developed as either a group or an individual work in the coming weeks and in the last week it will be presented in a final exhibition along with the process documentation.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The aim of the module is to recognise the relevance of religious and culturally formed images in everyday life, in advertising, film and the media or even in fashion, to reflect upon their position in the multi-religious Switzerland and to discuss the role that we as artists and designers have in dealing with religious imagery.
What does the juxtaposition of very different religious institutions in our society mean? Why do certain images hurt the feelings of people in particular religious communities? Why does conflict arise so quickly when discussing religion? When are pictures, signs and gestures for instance held to be profane and when are they holy? What significance does mysticism have today and what does it actually mean? Who do icons belong to and how do artists and designers handle them? What do we understand by the terms inter-religious or multicultural?
In this module such questions will be discussed, researched, realised creatively and presented in the final exhibition along with process documentation.
