Since the sixteenth century the Black Madonna of Einsiedeln has always been clothed in donated gowns. The wardrobe of the best-dressed woman in Europe comprises thirty-five pieces that are alternated according to the liturgical calendar and feast days. Making a gift of a new gown perpetuates the tradition. The image on the dress is of Our Lady’s Garden. Interpretation of the Hortus conclusus(Latin for “enclosed garden”) draws on symbolism pertaining to the Virgin Mary as well as on visions of paradise.
