We human beings have a profound need to feel we are accepted within a group: we want to belong. Most of us circulate in several groups at once and switch among them, from time to time; and we find that the group’s identity is in any case constantly changing owing to the family, work and leisure: it is always taking on some new slant or other. During my work placement in Scotland I discovered how strongly clannish Scots often feel. One symbol of this is the tartan clothunique to each clan. In my Bachelor project I used various techniques to create tartans that express my sense of currently belonging to three different groups.
