- PhD Preparation Course
This two-semester preparatory course begins in September. It is for people interested in pursuing a practice-based doctorate and wishing to prepare for the submission of their PhD proposal. Participants develop an exposé from an initial draft which they can use to apply for grants, doctoral programmes or doctoral supervision. The course provides an overview of doctoral opportunities at Swiss universities of applied sciences and arts in the disciplines of Design, Fine Arts or Film.

- Preparing for a PhD in Art, Design and Film (Massive Open Online Course MOOC)
This free online course prepares designers, artists and filmmakers for a practice-based doctorate. It can be started any time and completed at one's own pace. Over the course of six weeks, Prof Dr Rachel Mader and Prof Dr Axel Vogelsang take participants through the various stages of a doctorate with videos, texts and discussions. Six recent dissertation projects will be presented to illustrate the process.

Courses for Doctoral Candidates at the School of Design, Film and Art
- Doctoral Colloquium
The two-day doctoral colloquium takes place once per semester and is delivered by Prof Dr Gesa Ziemer (Hafen-City University Hamburg) and Pablo Müller (School of Design, Film and Art). The event is designed to foster academic exchange between doctoral candidates, who present their PhD dissertations in progress. They also discuss methods and content and practical questions around pursuing a doctorate.

Courses offered by the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU)
In the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Research (ZLLF) doctoral students can deepen their research and methodological skills in a mentoring programme, in the annual writing retreat and attend further courses.
Courses Offered by Campus Luzern
In the framework of Campus Luzern, a cooperation project between the HSLU, the University of Lucerne and the University of Teacher Education Lucerne, doctoral candidates have the opportunity to consolidate their research and methodological skills and knowledge. In addition, doctoral candidates employed by the HSLU have access to the courses offered by the Centre for Empirical Methods and the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Research (ZLLF).
