Preparatory Courses at the School of Design, Film and Art
- PhD Preparation Course
A new course format designed to prepare participants for doctoral studies in the fields of design, film, art & design education is currently in development. The course is scheduled to begin in October 2025, with applications expected to open in July.
This continuing education programme is aimed at individuals who wish to develop and realise a practice-based or academically oriented doctoral project with a focus on design, art, or teaching in art and design. The aim is to provide thorough preparation for a doctoral project at a Swiss or international art or design university. The course offer support for the methodological, structural, and content-related development of a doctoral project, and provides information on the various formats and frameworks of artistic, design-based, and research-oriented doctorates.

- Preparing for a PhD in Art, Design and Film (Massive Open Online Course MOOC)
This free online course prepares designers, artists and filmmakers for a practice-based doctorate. It can be started any time and completed at one's own pace. Over the course of six weeks, Prof Dr Rachel Mader and Prof Dr Axel Vogelsang take participants through the various stages of a doctorate with videos, texts and discussions. Six recent dissertation projects will be presented to illustrate the process.

- Research Internship
The research internship allows a first dive into research at a university of art and design. Interns can actively participate in ongoing research projects. In accompanying mentoring sessions, they reflect on their work in research and develop individual perspectives for their entry into research. The research internship takes place outside of the degree programme and is compensated. There are currently no open internship positions.
Courses for Doctoral Candidates at the School of Design, Film and Art
- Doctoral Colloquium
The two-day doctoral colloquium takes place once per semester and is delivered by Prof Dr Gesa Ziemer (Hafen-City University Hamburg) and Pablo Müller (School of Design, Film and Art). The event is designed to foster academic exchange between doctoral candidates, who present their PhD dissertations in progress. They also discuss methods and content and practical questions around pursuing a doctorate.

Courses offered by the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU)
In the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Research (ZLLF) doctoral students can deepen their research and methodological skills in a mentoring programme, in the annual writing retreat and attend further courses.
Courses Offered by Campus Luzern
In the framework of Campus Luzern, a cooperation project between the HSLU, the University of Lucerne and the University of Teacher Education Lucerne, doctoral candidates have the opportunity to consolidate their research and methodological skills and knowledge. In addition, doctoral candidates employed by the HSLU have access to the courses offered by the Centre for Empirical Methods and the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Research (ZLLF).
