The internet is an essential component of today’s society and economy. Designed as a decentralised medium for fast data transmission, it allows for businesses to offer their services virtually everywhere. The data gathered, referred to by many as the gold of the digital age, is often stored and processed in a central location. One critical issue with these data sets can be authenticity. Do they reflect reality or are they fake? Who vouches for their validity? No matter if it’s Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT) or Augmented and Virtual Reality applications, without verified data the rule remains “rubbish in…. rubbish out”.
The Information Systems Research Lab studies and develops data storage solutions and marketplaces that warrant data truth. What is more, by using Distributed Ledger Technology and the related decentralized data storage, trust is introduced to a multi-party system with participants that do not trust each other. Managing access privileges with Self Sovereign Identity ensures compliance with GDPR requirements and the users’ retaining control of their own data. These building blocks serve as a basis for the development of applications that revolve around the extraction of knowledge and important insights from large and heterogeneous data sets.
