New premises for the Lucerne School of Music: musical expertise under one roof

The Lucerne School of Music has moved into a modern education, research and concert building on the “Kampus Südpol” just outside Lucerne. From flexible rehearsal and teaching spaces to a public library, a club and a concert hall for 280 guests, the new building offers a state-of-the-art infrastructure and meets the diverse requirements of a creative competence centre for musical education.

The architectural competition for the new premises kicked off in 2013 with a preselection process open to all comers. Eight planning teams were shortlisted for the competition proper. Seven of them submitted their ideas. The jury – comprising of representatives from the investing entity, the future occupying entity, expert adjudicators and technical experts – submitted the two favourites to a revision process that was designed to enhance the quality of the projects.

The winning team was finally declared to be Enzmann Fischer & Büro Konstrukt AG. The jury decided its design responded well to the site and its surroundings and met the requirements of a university-level music institution. Building work is scheduled to begin in 2017, with occupancy planned for autumn 2020. The investment will be in the order of CHF 70 million and is being financed through private investment.

An all-embracing architectural project

The new building is the work of architects Enzmann Fischer & Büro Konstrukt AG. Its sustainable architectural and structural concept meets stringent requirements in terms of acoustics and sound insulation and provides flexible room layouts. The centrepiece of the eight-storey new building is a central foyer with four “sound and light” towers. The interior materials – wood and concrete – and the façade of clay bricks testify to the mission of creating a sustainable building designed to continue gaining in expressiveness over the decades.

Commissioning in time for the 2020/21 academic year

The construction work is in progress and will be completed in spring 2020, meaning that the building will be commissioned in time for the 2020/21 academic year. Its realisation is costing in the region of CHF 79.5 million, including building land, reserves and additional acoustical treatment to the structure and rooms.
