Thermal energy may be stored by sensible or latent heat storage. In a latent process, the thermal energy is stored by a phase transition of the material (in most cases a transition between liquid and solid). In the phase transition a substantial amount of energy can be extracted or injected either during solidification or melting without a change in temperature.
For the material research of PCM (Phase Change Materials) a test bench is available. The design of the test bench allows accurate measurements of heat transfer from different materials in a transient state. This allows accurate determination about the behaviour of different storage materials in the phase transition. This test bench makes it possible to explore potential areas of application.
