Master of Arts in Film with Specialisation in Animation
Graduates of the Master Animation
- develop and tell their own stories and find suitable animation formats for them.
- create worlds and characters and have a profound understanding of the connections between design, artistic expression, technology and implementation.
- are familiar with future-oriented technologies and have the competence to acquire new techniques, technologies and subject areas on their own initiative and in a professional manner.
- know production processes and production contexts in the field of animation and are able to plan, implement and evaluate animation projects.
- are able to position and present themselves, their projects and their skills on the market.
- know the specific requirements of funding bodies and their requirements for project financing.
- understand national and international production and co-production contexts and can position their projects on the market.
- are familiar with relevant examples from the history of animated film, are able to analyse and evaluate them and, with the help of these insights, critically situate and reflect on their own work.
- are able to place their own work in a superordinate, theoretical framework.
- are able to point out different approaches to a solution and are able to justify their approach argumentatively.
- understand how to criticise others in a professional manner, how to accept criticism and how to implement it.
Graduates of the specialisation in animation distinguish themselves as directors or take on responsible positions in large animation film productions. They also position themselves in the field of commissioned productions and work on commercial as well as applied animation productions such as advertising clips or didactic formats for museum and exhibition contexts.
The Master's also prepares students for an academic professional future in teaching and/or research. Graduates have the basic theoretical training and a sufficiently high number of ECTS credits to pursue a doctorate after the Master's degree

Additional requirements for the Master of Arts in Animation:
- Letter of motivation, approx. one to two A4 pages
- Your own project idea for your Master's project:
a) Idea for an animated series or an animated feature film or
b) Concept for an animated short film or
c) Concept for an explorative animation-based format, e.g. a technological development, animation-based installation, experimental animation format or similar
- passing an aptitude test based on the submitted portfolio and an interview as well as the submitted project idea
- general openness, willingness and motivation to work independently on new content and skills
- good knowledge of the teaching language English (passive/active)
Interested candidates apply using the registration button and enclose their certificates, a CV, a letter of motivation and their project concept or project outline. In addition, we expect a portfolio documenting previous artistic and creative work in the field of animation.
After the application documents have been examined by the admissions committee, suitable candidates will be invited for an interview. The selection is based on the application documents and the result of the personal interview with the admissions committee.
