Whether the work of an individual or a team, student projects must be carefully devised, from the concept to the theoretical basis to the detailed plans for realisation. Budget planning is an essential part of this process, as are cooperation with external partners and public presentations of the work. In the Lucerne School of Design, Film and Art’s generously equipped Workshops, existing knowledge of the disciplines Digital Skills, Video, Sound, Printing, Woodwork, Metalwork, Plastics, Ceramics and Photography can be deepened and practical skills further honed. Comprehensive support and guidance from committed well-known artists, cultural studies scholars, and other inspiring mentors are assured students throughout their degree programme.
Additional practical skills are gained through participation in urban interventions, land art projects, and exhibitions of art in public space as well as through practice-oriented work placements (internships) and research projects. The intensive research activities of lecturers and mentors and cooperative ventures with such international partners as the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna or HEAD Geneva guarantee that theory and practice continually mutually inform each other, as do individual practices and collective strategies. In parallel to their artistic projects, students take MAPS modules and/or research modules in the Cultural Studies and Art Research programmes, and they attend both the Pré-doc seminar offered in cooperation with HEAD Geneva (pilot phase launched autumn semester 2014/15) and the interregional cooperative network events organised by several Swiss Universities of Fine Arts; and they benefit thus from ample opportunities for interregional and international exchange.
