Textiles follow people throughout their lives: we put them on, decorate our homes with them, sleep in them and sit on them. Textile designers constantly rediscover this diverse world of fibres and textiles. With a distinctive sense of colours, patterns, textures and structures, functionality and sensuality, tradition and innovation. With a flair for how the properties of materials and designs fit together. With the ability to think of the surface design in the transition into space and to the body and develop their products with a view to their use and further processing in various contexts such as fashion, interior architecture, product design or also in research and fine arts.
We challenge our students to follow their passions, make decisions, develop their own stance and find their way among the diverse possibilities of textile design, which has a long-standing tradition in Switzerland. At the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, we offer an ideal setting with spacious workshops, individual studios and a broad curriculum. We teach art and design, exploratory, craftsmanship, technological and interdisciplinary skills with a solid theoretical and practical basis. When exploring the entire production chain, we raise awareness from day one for the various areas of application and for the specific counterparty that is supposed to buy or process the products. And we foster a critical approach to sustainability and ecology issues, which have a special value in the globalised textiles industry.
Our graduates are in-demand pros in analysing design briefings of clients and developing textiles that impress on an aesthetic, haptic and functional level and meet current needs. Their works regularly win awards and are supported with grants.
