The project presented is based on my exchange semester in Ahmedabad, in Gujarat, India. It provides insights into the exciting process of immersing oneself in a new culture: the proximate convergence, fascination and the final return. Using motifs from my memories I designed cloths, which, with great appreciation, show the diversity of these processes, and which are driven by an attempt to counteract the transience of remembrances.
Issues of ‘cultural appropriation’ are likewise discussed and reflected in the project. The intensive confrontation with the topic and the textile realisation demonstrate that inspirations from the cultural other can indeed be used positively.
