Infrastructure Object Design Studios and Workshops

In the immediate vicinity of the spacious, bright studios, supervised workshops are available to students - wood, metal, 3D with ceramics, plaster and plastic and a digital workshop. This constellation is a structural implementation of the interplay of design and production. The workshop becomes an extended workplace.

Location

Since the autumn semester of 2019, all fields of study of Design, Film and Art have been united under the roof of a former nylon factory in the Viscosistadt in Lucerne North. The juxtaposition of the eleven Bachelor's and three Master's degree courses enables an exciting exchange and supports interdisciplinary work.

Seit Herbst 2016 sind bereits die Hälfte der Studienrichtungen in einem umgenutzten Industriegebäude auf dem Viscosiareal in Luzern Nord eingezogen.

Der grosszügige Eingangsbereich im Foyer wird multifunktional genutzt und schafft eine Brücke zwischen den Studienrichtungen

Metal workshop

Students will deepen their knowledge of materials, use various techniques such as welding, soldering and forging, and develop their own working methods in dealing with the formal and constructive aspects of metal design. On request, it is also possible to work in the workshop outside opening hours. Students of object design are introduced to the use of the workshop in the first-semester modules Material Basics: Metal.

Woodworking workshop

An understanding of the diverse machining possibilities with machines and tools is the basis for expanding one's own design concept. The students are therefore accompanied and supported in the realisation of their projects. Students of object design are introduced to the use of in the first-semester modules Material Basics: Wood.

3-D Workshop

Practical work in this case encompasses the modelling, moulding and casting, and processing and sculpting of malleable materials such as clay, plaster, wax and plastic, as well as the corresponding casting techniques using lost moulding forms or flexible forms. The 3-D workshop is normally open outside regular teaching hours to students with prior knowledge of the requisite techniques and materials. Object Design students are introduced to the use of the workshop in the first-semester modules Material Basics: Ceramics and Material Basics: Synthetics.

Digital Workshop

At the digital workshop, students have around-the-clock access to a large-format 3-axis milling machine, a laser cutting machine, an A0 digital cutter and a ceramic printer. Object Design Students are introduced to the use of the workshop in the third-semester Digital Workshop module.

Studio Life

The interactions in the studio between the students from all three years of the course with their different professional backgrounds, as well as the Object Design alumni, is one of the most important parts of the programme. The students not only learn from the lecturers, but also indirectly train each other. This culture of mutual appreciation forms the basis for a network in later work life.
