What is Camera Arts?
Photography is everywhere. It exists in an array of possible and often coexisting manifestations. Thanks to the omnipresence of smartphones and the possibility to take pictures all the time and everywhere, it has never been easier to produce images and to share them in real time. From advertising to private communication to artistic production or video games, photography is an integral part of our day-to-day lives. The boundaries between vernacular photography (that is, “everyday life”- photography), commerce and art—including their presentation platforms—are increasingly blurred.
At the same time, more and more AI-generated images are flooding the public discourse, forcing us to consider how we should address this phenomenon. Moreover, the pervasive dissemination of AI technologies in the context of surveillance, online tracking, biometry, automated face recognition and descriptive metadata raises urgent ethical, political and philosophical questions that we as image producers and consumers must address. This means the image and media culture that is shaping our day-to-day lives and our perception of the world is in perpetual flux. It requires new documentary strategies and the ability to create meaningful images and to correctly “read” images, to challenge them, to reflect on them and to contextualise them. This is what we teach in Camera Arts.
