The Lucerne School of Design, Film and Art is deeply rooted in the region, in artistic practice and in society. It strives to create proximity. Exploring the key challenges of our time, it aims to answer questions such as: How can we use our planet's resources sustainably? What forms of human-machine collaboration should we aim for? What does a society worth living in look like? To be able to advance within these complex thematic areas, different actors with different mindsets must come together and collaborate: interdisciplinarity is the key. The School promotes interdisciplinarity through its teaching formats, by creating connecting points and by cultivating a close network between the HSLU’s six Schools.

The students acquire filmic, design and artistic skills in twelve bachelor’s and seven master’s programmes. They develop empathy and the ability to understand and intelligently communicate complex issues and interdisciplinary contexts. They are courageous, they try new things and create innovations for business, culture and society. The workshops and labs on the Viscosistadt campus are all steeped in tradition and not only offer space for experimentation, but they also prepare the students for a career after graduation. The art foundation course offers a solid basis for the degree programmes.

Four research groups collaborate with external partners in projects of practical relevance, advancing the foundations of their respective disciplines. Mindful of society’s needs and challenges, they investigate the conditions of art production and reception in public spaces, develop novel media formats and forms of narration, experiment with materials for sustainable production and present human-centred solutions for the design of public structures amid digital and eco-social transformation.
