Biography
Tobias Matter focuses mainly on the analog-digital interface in his design and research work. He is particularly interested in the possibilities and potentials of augmented reality (AR), mostly linked to mobile use and narrative experience in physical space.
Tobias Matter completed his BA in Graphic Design at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts in 2014. He graduated from the Master in Design with a specialization in "Design Entrepreneurship" at the Bern University of the Arts in January 2018.
Since 2019 Tobias Matter is pursuing his PhD at the HafenCity University Hamburg at the CityScienceLab. The dissertation focuses on augmented reality and its integration into participatory urban planning. In the context of this thesis, AR will be investigated with regard to its design and participation potential as a social and design tool that can initiate and lead conversations and collaborative processes in community and urban development. In the course of the dissertation, application-specific solutions for combined forms of presentation and interaction using AR solutions will be developed and evaluated. First supervisor is Prof. Dr. Gesa Ziemer, HafenCity University Hamburg, second supervision is provided by Prof. Dr. Axel Vogelsang, Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.
Tobias Matter is currently working as a research associate in the Visual Narrative research group at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts – Design & Art. Likewise, he is a guest researcher at CityScienceLab in Hamburg as part of his dissertation.
His interests and expertise, especially of augmented realities, can be applied in his teaching activities in the study programs Data Design & Art, Graphic Design, Spatial Design and in the IDA module at HSLU – D&K, as well as in the Master Data Science.
