Biography
Samuel Frei is a design researcher at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. He initiates and leads research projects and implements them with partners from the field. He teaches on topics of visual communication and storytelling, questions design knowledge and explores creative processes at analog and digital interfaces. He can sometimes be found in Dublin, where he is working on his PhD at the SMARTLab at University College Dublin.
He graduated with a Diploma in Biology at the University of Zurich in 1997. He worked for several years as a project manager and team leader for HR learning services in the financial industries. In 2011, shortly after completion of his MA in Design, he joined the Lucerne School of Art and Design as researcher. At the same time Samuel started his PhD program at University College Dublin, in which he investigates the broader field of knowledge media and experience design with focus on emerging new technologies as tools for learning in cultural institutions. 2013 he was appointed coordinator for continuing and executive education at Lucerne School of Art and Design, since 2019 in a leading position.
Since 2020 he leads the module "Data Visualisation and Narration" within the Master in Applied Information and Data Science.
Throughout his academic education and later professional career, Samuel worked as a freelance exhibition designer and scientific illustrator in the conservation and education sector.
