The Music Education Research group examines processes of musical transmission, skill acquisition and learning processes in varying social and historical contexts.

Publikation «Performing, Engaging, Knowing»

In collaboration with cultural and educational institutions, the research group builds basic knowledge in the field of music education as well as developing strategies and didactic tools for institutions and teaching practices. Its objective is to support learners with their varied needs and abilities, groups engaging in musical activities, and music teachers. Drawing from an international and interdisciplinary network, , the projects encompass approaches from empirical music education research, music physiology, psychology, ethnomusicology, sociology, and historical musicology.

The research group is active in the following fields of research: “Instrumental/ Vocal Pedagogy”, “School Music” and “Musicultural Participation”.

The researchers in the field of school music study classroom-based music teaching from a variety of perspectives ranging from practice-based research to education theory. This research project also extends to group-based learning processes, music programmes in compulsory education and music classes at upper-secondary level. Music-related classroom teaching research is one of the project’s focal points.

Musicultural Participation

The researchers in the field of musicultural participation explore the informal dissemination of musical knowledge in amateur, lay, and traditional culture. Striving to increase musical participation, they also investigate everyday musical activity among various social groups and the interactions between people (and animals) and their sonic environments. To this end, they combine research endeavours with development projects that revolve around the design of sonic spaces and encourage people to engage creatively with our sonic and immaterial cultural heritage.
