Max Sturzenegger (1904-1988) led the Allgemeine Musikgesellschaft Luzern (now: Lucerne Symphony Orchestra) between 1939 and 1960 and, in this role, acted as musical supervisor at the Stadttheater Luzern (Lucerne Theatre). A native of Schaffhausen with an international artistic reputation, Sturzenegger studied in Zurich, Paris and Berlin and, amongst other things, was appointed to the post of music director in Frauenfeld, then at the Stadttheater Bern. The music library is in possession of a number of instrumental and piano scores bearing both his autograph as well as annotations.
The 2005/06 seasonal programme of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra saw Mario Gerteis look back on Sturzenegger's work in Lucerne on the occasion of the orchestra's 200th anniversary.
