Embarking on a bachelor’s program Getting prepared and ready

To be admitted to a bachelor’s program, you must meet certain educational, professional and language requirements. No matter whether your qualification is a federal vocational baccalaureate, an academic baccalaureate or other diploma, here’s all you need to know about our admission requirements.

Vocational baccalaureate (Swiss school system)

Educational requirements

All types of baccalaureate are accepted for our degree programs. If you decide to study engineering - particularly, if you have a vocational baccalaureate in a non-technical field - we suggest you attend our complementary courses in math and physics.

Professional experience

To study at a Swiss university of applied sciences, you need at least one year of professional experience. However, at the Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture, you can also gain the required work experience as part of our Practice-Integrated Bachelor’s Program (PiBS) if your German language level is C1 or higher. The type of professional qualification required depends on your degree program of choice. This list provides an overview of the required vocational certificates in a relevant field (only in German). 

Work experience

No prior professional experience? No problem. You can gain the necessary year of work experience in a vocational training program before starting your studies. 

Practice-integrated bachelor’s program (PiBS)

Our engineering programs also offer the option of gaining the required professional experience as part of the Practice-integrated Bachelor’s Program (PiBS) (only in German), a four-year study program with integrated practical work.

Academic baccalaureate or specialist baccalaureate (Swiss school system)

Educational requirements

We accept baccalaureates with any focal point and specialization. If you decide to study engineering - particularly, if you have a baccalaureate in a non-technical field - we suggest you attend our complementary courses in math and physics.

Professional experience

To study at a university of applied sciences in Switzerland, you need at least one year of professional experience in a relevant field (only in German). Prior internships in a relevant field of at least one month (full time) can be recognized as professional experience.

Practice-integrated bachelor’s program (PiBS)

Our engineering programs offer the option of gaining the required professional experience as part of the Practice-integrated Bachelor’s Program (PiBS) if your German language level is C1 or higher. This is a four-year study program with integrated practical work.

Work experience

Other qualifications

Educational requirements

If you have a certificate from a foreign or international school equivalent to a Swiss baccalaureate, you can study at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

Certificates comparable to the Swiss vocational and specialist baccalaureate (particularly from Germany and Austria) will be accepted. Please refer to our Secretariat or the relevant head of program for further information about the recognition of your school leaving qualification.

Studying without a baccalaureate

Prospective students over 25 years of age with a relevant professional qualification (only in German) and additional professional experience are eligible for the pre-admission course (only in German). The course offers a pathway to admission without a baccalaureate.

Professional experience

To be admitted to a university of applied sciences in Switzerland, you need at least a year of professional experience in a relevant field (only in German). If you enroll for an engineering subject, you may also gain the required professional experience as part of the Practice-integrated Bachelor’s Program (PiBS) if your German language level is C1 or higher. Prior internships in a relevant field of at least one month (full time) can be recognized as professional experience.

Language requirements

To enroll for one of the German-taught programs, you need German language skills at C1 level or higher. You have either spent the last two years or more of your school education at a German-speaking school or obtained a language certificate at the required level before the start of the program.

If you want to enroll for the English-taught BSc Energy and Environmental Systems Engineering program, you need an English language certificate at C1 level or higher or have spent the last two years or more of your school education at an English-speaking school. Students whose first language is German may start the program with English skills at B2 level but must produce proof of proficiency at C1 level by the start of the second study year. To this end, they can take a free language course at the HSLU and earn credits that count toward the degree.
