Simultaneous heat and material transfer refers to, for example, drying processes, partial condensation, sublimation or adiabatic humidification. In these cases, heat (due to a temperature difference) and material (in the form of a mass flow due to a difference in concentration) are transferred simultaneously.
For example, in a tumble dryer heat from the warm process air is transferred to the cold and damp laundry. However, there is also a mass flow of water from the damp laundry to the dry process air. By knowing the occurring physical processes, the energy demand of machinery and equipment can be reduced. Through the development of computational models and with help of experimental investigations, such systems are analyzed and optimization measures are suggested.
