The face expresses our individuality. Our beings are revealed in their complexity in the diversity of our facial features. But what happens when this intimacy is no longer safeguarded and is recorded and stored by all-pervading surveillance systems? Cameras equipped with artificial intelligence identify faces, analyse them and feed the findings into central databases. The protection of personal privacy in public spaces ceases to be a natural given.
In her project Unknown, Paula Caviezel confronts automatic facial recognition technology. The resulting accessories highlight the topic of automatic surveillance by making data collection a manifest experience, and with their use restore the user’s self-determination.
