Marc, how does it come that you established your own company in real estate business?
After completing my commercial apprenticeship, I really wanted to pursue higher education. The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts offered the ideal solution for me since the programmes are designed to be job-related and equip its students with skills, abilities, and concepts which can be directly and easily applied to daily business. With the possibility of working and studying simultaneously, I had the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in the real estate business. After a while, I had the chance to build my own business. Thanks to the fact that I am able to work besides my studies, I did not want to forego this opportunity.
By doing a Master of Science you decided to complete a consecutive Master programme. How is it possible to combine this time-consuming course with your professional life?
In order to be successful these days, higher education plays a critical role. Therefore, I was searching for a master’s programme that allows me to further develop my own business and, at the same time, to deepen my knowledge in banking and finance I need for daily business. Owing to the proper and early planning of timetables by the university administration, I am able to organise my calendar accordingly and efficiently. Of course, there are difficult times, especially during the examination period, but proper semester organisation helps a lot to manage the big workload.
What is the value of a MSc in Banking and Finance in your business area and how can it help you to further develop your company?
In addition to diplomas, qualifications and practical knowledge, there are other important factors contributing to a successful professional life, e.g. a broad network. During the studies at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, you have the possibility to set up or broaden your personal network. Especially in our master’s programme, students meet with interesting personalities from the finance industry. Due to the relatively small class size, you get acquainted with your fellow students, many of whom will hold positions of high responsibility across industries in the future. Since I mostly work in the fields of project development and home sales, I often get in contact with professionals from pension funds or banks. As a young entrepreneur, my academic background provides a significant advantage in these situations: I have a broad knowledge of different finance industry areas and our business partners as well as our clients recognise and appreciate this. I am perfectly able to negotiate with other professionals and thus gain our customers’ trust.
Do you still find time for your hobbies besides the studies and your business?
Of course, working and studying simultaneously is not just a walk in the park. However, the studies and the diploma are absolutely worth it. As mentioned earlier, there are tough periods where you have to work very hard. The examination period, group tasks and research papers need to be planned and organised very well during the semesters and sometimes there is very little free time. Team spirit within the class helps to solve different tasks and to get through periods of high pressure and workload. Various events held outside of school such as ski weekends or just meeting for an after-work beer contribute to the class spirit. In conclusion, if you organise and plan efficiently and ahead of time, there is also enough time left for your hobbies.
