With its focus on making the invisible visible, the VA-PEPR team developed new formats for everyday people to engage with voice technologies and AI. But how may these everyday experiences, practices and routines inform policymaking? How do policymakers themselves learn about and engage with radically new technologies? This workshop builds on a prior workshop where we addressed policymaking in the context of the WHO Global Initiative for AI for Health using our project’s prototypes. We are now opening up this conversation to researchers, practitioners, and professionals striving for innovation in policymaking. Together, we will explore the current state-of-the-art, identify new possibilities and draft initial roadmaps.

The workshop will start with an overview and critical reflection of innovative approaches to policymaking to date. Participants will explore how we may provide those responsible for developing guidelines and policies for AI and digital technologies with meaningful and actionable insights. In this process, participants will learn where design already engages with policymakers, policymaking, and policy implementation in Switzerland and beyond. The workshop will include short inputs from experts and focused discussions with the intent to identify future collaborations around the topic. The results will be captured in a position paper to which all participants are invited to contribute.

Umgang mit dem Spannungsfeld von Datennutzung und Schutz der Privatsphäre

Organisationen bearbeiten personenbezogene, sensitive Daten und verfolgen damit Ziele, welche von den betroffenen Personen (Datensubjekten) unterschiedlich stark geteilt werden. Sie müssen dabei einerseits die Privatsphäre der Datensubjekte schützen, andererseits sollen sie die Daten im Interesse der Datensubjekte nutzen. Erkenntnisse aus unserer VA-PEPR Forschung deuten darauf hin, dass dabei die Kriterien Machbarkeit, Wünschbarkeit und Wirtschaftlichkeit eine zentrale Rolle spielen.

In diesem Workshop möchten wir die Perspektiven von Verwaltung, Forschung und Privatwirtschaft zusammenbringen, um bestehende Umgangspraktiken mit Daten zu hinterfragen und neue Ansätze zur Datennutzung zu diskutieren, in welchen Datensubjekte mehr Kontrolle über ihre Daten erhalten. Dabei können Datenintermediäre eine Rolle spielen. 

Der Workshop beinhaltet Beiträge von Expert:innen und richtet sich an alle Interessierten.

See what you say - A workshop to explore what AI hears when it is listening to you

Conversational artificial intelligence (AI) refers to digital systems that use natural language to communicate with users. Thanks to the advances in deep learning and powerful language models, most recently ChatGPT, a new generation of conversational AI systems have emerged that enable conversations with human-like qualities.
 
But how capable are these technologies? How well can they hear our voices? And how much information can companies decode from hours and hours of voice data without sitting down and listening to it all? This 2-hour workshop will use custom-made devices that will put the participants in the shoes of data collectors to understand how much they can understand from our conversations.

Participants are expected to gain valuable insights into the potential as well as limitations of large language models. They will explore ChatGPT's ability to analyse our conversations as well as experience our visualisations of this data.

Dealing with the Tension of Data Use and Protection of Privacy

Organizations process personal, sensitive data and pursue objectives that are shared to varying degrees by the persons concerned (data subjects). On the one hand, they must protect the privacy of the data subjects, and on the other hand, they should use the data in the interests of the data subjects. Findings from our VA-PEPR research indicate that the criteria of feasibility, desirability and cost-effectiveness play a central role.

In this workshop, we would like to bring together the perspectives of administration, research and the private sector in order to question existing data handling practices and discuss new approaches to data use in which data subjects are given more control over their data. Data intermediaries can play a role here.

There will be inputs from experts. Anyone interested in the topic is invited to join.

KI und VA für Ressourcenmanagement, Prävention und Gesundheitsförderung unter Berücksichtigung von weitestgehendem Datenschutz

Nach einer kompakten Darstellung der Forschungsergebnisse erfahren die Teilnehmenden, wie auf dieser Basis eine KI-gestützte, virtuelle Assistenz entwickelt wurde und erleben durch eigene Erfahrungen und Experimente, wie man möglichst hilfreiche Antworten zu Ressourcenmanagement, Prävention und Gesundheitsförderung von dieser VA erhält.

Dieser Workshop dient dem Kennenlernen der relax-concentrate-create Applikation der HSLU, mittels derer Daten für das VA-PEPR Projekt erhoben wurden und welche eine Weiterentwicklung durch die Nutzung von Sprache und ChatGPT erfuhr.

Die Teilnehmenden werden gebeten, einen Laptop oder ein internetfähiges Device möglichst in der Grösse eines Tablets mitzubringen. Zum Experimentieren mit der KI-gestützten Sprachassistenz ist das Mitbringen eines Headsets hilfreich.

Digital Offboarding – do we need digital exit strategies for an aging society?

Smart homes operated and directed by virtual assistants and AI promise many benefits for an aging population. Current research and development therefore focus on how to get people ‘onboard’ the digital, the metaverse and AI. User-friendly and meaningful services strive to secure ‘ongoing’ engagement, to avoid discontinuation of use and to ‘keep people onboard.’ While research has begun to address the requirements and opportunities for aging users, we know little about the interplay of digital dependencies (i.e., the fact that some services are only available digitally) the aging process (i.e., difficulties in adjusting to new technologies, loss of ability to work with or access previously familiar apps), and ever-changing technologies (i.e., updates, new versions, systems breakdowns, etc.). How may we learn more about this interplay and what might it mean for the delivery of private and public services in an ageing society? Do we need to plan for digital exit strategies at later stages in life? 

In this workshop, we want to unpack the issues emerging for people who are digitally literate, self-sufficient and capable of accessing public services through e-government for most of their lives yet experience a loss of these abilities. Initial questions include but are not limited to: 

• What challenges do aging societies and elderly people face in a digital/AI service landscape, public and private?
• How might we avoid ageism, yet provide protection for individuals and others? How might we conduct research in these areas ethically?
• What might user research look like, what forms might it take?
• How can we rethink the design of policies for digital and AI technologies from the perspective of everyday people? What legal provisions might we need to think of or set in place?
• What might be the implications for the individual, their care takers, or elderly care more generally? How may we prepare for new roles and responsibilities?

The aim of this workshop is to kick off a new area of research and practice within the EU Digital Fairness Act. Anyone will benefit but if you have first- or second-hand experience with aging digital users or want to participate in the future development of solutions, please come and share your perspectives.

Lajla Fetic; Tech Governance and Digital Policy Expert

Lajla Fetic is a Senior Expert in Tech Governance and Digital Policy and specializes in the social implications of artificial intelligence (AI). She advocates for effective AI governance to increase the transparent and accountable use of technology. Lajla conducts research, speaks, and writes about how and under what conditions technology can strengthen the common good. She is a passionate lecturer on digital ethics and has been named one of the 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics for her contributions.

Prior, Lajla strategically developed and co-led two projects on strengthening the common good in a digital society for the Bertelsmann Stiftung. For example, the reframe [Tech] project aimed to develop solutions for managing algorithmic risks and motivate harnessing the potential of algorithms for public interest. She has co-authored several guides on AI ethics and helped create the AI ethics label as part of the AI Ethics Impact Group. Before joining the Bertelsmann Stiftung, Lajla worked on digitalization and automation topics for the Stiftung Neue Verantwortung and an international public sector consultancy. She holds a Master of Public Policy from the Hertie School.
 

Dr. Ame Elliott; Designer, Researcher, and Strategist

Dr. Ame Elliott is a designer, researcher, and strategist with more than twenty years experience in Human-Centered technology development. As Design Director for Simply Secure, she led multidisciplinary teams of researchers, software developers, and policy experts working on privacy and accountability for artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. During her time at IDEO San Francisco, she led tech strategy projects for Fortune 500 companies, guiding projects from initial concept through prototyping and in-market launch. As a research scientist at Xerox PARC, she developed early IoT applications in the Computing Science Lab. Ame holds eight patents and was recognized as a Most Creative Person in Business by Fast Company. She earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in Human-Computer Interaction.
  

Prof. Regina Hanke; Macromedia University of Applied Sciences, BEDA Board Member

Regina Hanke is a professor of Communication Design and Design Management at Macromedia University of Applied Sciences.
 
She started her design career in 1995 after studying communication design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. She initially worked with the award winning design agency ‘The Partners’ where she learned about how good ideas can generate a ‘Market Pull’. As „jobchef“ designer at renowned design agency MetaDesign, working with Erik Spiekermann, she gained insights into processes and functions in complex Branding and Corporate Design tasks for international corporations.
 
Today, Regina is the strategic and design lead for Lindgrün GmbH. Besides an array of clients stemming mainly from non-profit organisations and health care, she works with partners in medical research universities and participates in research projects. Additionally, she and her partner are the founders of ‚Leila – the medical guideline app‘, which was successfully launched in 2020 and already supports thousands of Health Care Workers in keeping track with evidence based medicine.
 
Regina is passionate about strategic and behavioral design and continues to foster design understanding across the sectors – especially through workshops and also as an author. She was a member of the board for the International Design Center in Berlin (IDZ) from 2009 to 2013 and is a standing member of the International Health Design Network. In 2017 Regina became a Member of the Society of Communication Design e.V. and since 2021 is a member of the Council for Europe and International Affairs at Deutscher Designtag.
 

Prof. Dr. Peter Kirchschläger; University of Lucerne

Prof. Dr. theol. lic. phil. Peter G. Kirchschläger is a Full Professor of Theological Ethics and Director of the Institute of Social Ethics ISE at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Lucerne since 2017. He has been a Research Fellow at the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein (South Africa) since 2014, and since 2023, Visiting Professor at the Chair for Neuroinformatics and Neural Systems at ETH Zurich as well at the ETH AI Center – one of the world's largest hubs for research in the field of so-called "Artificial Intelligence". Prior, he was a Visiting Fellow at Yale University, in the USA (2015-2017).
