Overview
This course covers the fundamentals of academic writing, with an emphasis on three aspects:
1. Preparing to write: research and writing process, the use of note-taking and citation software, generating ideas and brainstorming
2. The structures of scientific texts: outlining, traditional ways of structuring academic texts and other formats, reader engagement
3. Language and style: Anglo-American linguistic features and norms (and important differences to German), the four rules of style, review checklist
The course consists of a full day of input, discussion and exercises. This is followed by individual coaching sessions (1-on-1 slots to be scheduled).
The emphasis is on lecturers, PhD students and researchers who are non-native speakers and planning on writing in English.
