This course covers the fundamentals of academic writing, with an emphasis on three aspects:
1. Preparing to write: research and writing process, note-taking and the use of citation software, developing ideas and brainstorming
2. The structure of scientific texts: outlining, the traditional structuring of academic texts and other media, reader engagement
3. Language and style: Anglo-American linguistic features and norms (and notable differences to German language use), the four rules of style, review checklist
The emphasis is on non-native speaking PhD students and researchers in the fields of social sciences, economics and the humanities, including health sciences, who write or are planning to write in English.
