Admission requirements for the Bachelor’s programmes in Fine Arts, Art and Design Education and Film
- Federally recognised or equivalent academic baccalaureate
- Federally recognised or equivalent professional vocational education with a vocational baccalaureate
- Certificate of a specialised baccalaureate school in the field of Design Film Art or
- a certificate of another, equivalent recognised upper-secondary education programme providing general provisions
- as well as, in any case, language skills in the language of instruction that are commensurate with the level of education
In the case of the Bachelor’s programme in Fine Arts and the Bachelor’s programme in Film, applicants are also required to pass a design/art-related aptitude test.
The Master of Arts in Fine Arts with Major in Art Teaching however does not accept "sur dossier" applications and requires in addition to the condition above, either a primary school teaching degree or an upper secondary level degree (baccalaureate, vocational education with vocational baccalaureate or specialized baccalaureate). An admission with a vocational baccalaureate without “passerelle” scheme is also possible.
In exceptional cases, the admission requirements may be waived if a candidate has displayed exceptional artistic talent (“sur dossier” application). Applicants must provide evidence of their previous course of study.
Admission requirements for the Bachelor’s programme in Design (Visual Communication, Product and Industrial Design)
- Federally recognised or equivalent academic baccalaureate plus a one-year art foundation course / remedial course or placement year (or longer) in a field related to the specialisation.
- Federally recognised or equivalent professional vocational education with a vocational baccalaureate in a field related to the specialisation (in addition, the one-year art foundation course / remedial course or a placement year (or longer) in a professional setting related to the specialisation is recommended)
- Federally recognised or equivalent professional vocational education with a vocational baccalaureate plus a one-year art foundation course / remedial course or placement year (or longer) in a field related to the specialization
- Completion of a specialised school with a specialised baccalaureate plus a one-year art foundation course / remedial course or placement year (or longer) in a professional setting related to the specialisation.
- as well as, in any case, language skills in the language of instruction that are commensurate with the level of education
Applicants to all specialisations of the Visual Communication as well as Product and Industrial Design programmes (with the exception of the Design Management, International programme) are also required to pass an design/art-related aptitude test.

Admission requirements for the Bachelor’s programme in Design Management International
The following degrees and additionally required achievements fulfil the admissions criteria:
- Secondary school leaving certificate qualifying for studies at university level (Swiss students: vocational or academic baccalaureate)
- Placement year (or longer) in a field related to the specialization
- English language skills at level C1 or higher
Previous attendance of the art foundation course is recommended, but not a requirement.
The admission requirements for the Design Management International also include a one-page motivational letter.
Admission requirements for the Master’s programme in Design, Film and Fine Arts
- Admission to the Master's degree programme requires a Bachelor's degree or Diploma degree in a field relevant to the field of study.
Students from another field of knowledge who have great potential within the field of study in question, please contact the head of the program.
For the teaching diploma programme in Artistic Design at Matura Schools as part of the Master's programme in Fine Arts, specialisation in Art Teaching, a primary school teaching diploma or an upper secondary level diploma is required in addition to the completed Bachelor's programme (Gymnasiale Maturität, EFZ with Berufsmaturität or Fachmaturität).
Application fees for the Bachelor's and Master's programmes
A fee of CHF 200 applies. The application fee will be paid directly with the registration.
You may pay your application fee using a PostFinance Card (debit card), TWINT, a credit card (Mastercard or VISA) and PostFinance Mastercard® Value. Once the payment goes through, PostFinance will send you a confirmation of payment via email. If you pay by credit card on the website via payment service providers PostFinance or SIX, your surname, first name, address, post code, city, email address and credit card information will be forwarded to both your credit card issuer and credit card acquirer. If you decide to pay by credit card, you will be prompted to enter all the information required for the transaction.
The transfer and sharing of your personal data takes place in accordance with the provisions of the Swiss data protection legislation or the EU GDPR. If the EU GDPR applies, the legal basis is the fulfilment of a contract (art. 6, para 1, lit b of the EU GDPR). To learn more about the handling of your credit card information by these third parties, we advise you to also consult the terms and conditions and privacy policy of your credit card issuer.
The enrolment fee of CHF 150 is only charged in case of an admission.
Admission requirements, art foundation course
- A completed upper-secondary education (an academic baccalaureate or vocational baccalaureate is desirable, but, unlike for the Bachelor’s programme, not required)
- Passing of the entrance examination
Admission fees for the art foundation course
Anyone who submits the set assignment becomes liable for the CHF 125 admissions fee. A bank transfer slip should be submitted with the assignment as proof of payment. An invoice will be sent beforehand to all registered applicants.
The student confirms that he/she has read the sheet "Studiengebühren- Gestalterischer Vorkurs" and that he/she is aware that, depending on his/her place of residence under civil law, the canton is not expected to grant a subsidy. If you have any questions, please contact the secretariat.
Digital instruction
Copyrights and privacy rights as well as the right to one’s own image also apply online. Written materials, videos and other school material shared on ILIAS and shown in web meetings shall not be passed on to third parties. Web meetings shall not be recorded without the express consent of all participants.
Data protection guidelines
- Use of personal data
§1 The Lucerne School of Design Film Art conforms to the applicable data protection legislation when handling the personal data of students.
§2 By signing the application form, students consent to the Lucerne School of Design Film Art processing and/or linking their personal data (e.g. first name, surname, matriculation number, ECTS credits, degree programme etc.) and photos for the purposes of planning, organisation, evaluation, funding, statistics, information, continuing education advice, in-house learning platforms and classroom portraits. This applies before, during and after the degree programme. This also includes the transmission of the necessary data to the federal offices BFS and SERI, the Intercantonal Agreement Cantons, the Swiss Confederation and the Central Compensation Office (CENT).
§3 With their registration, students also consent to their data (first name, surname, address, phone number, e-mail address, date of birth, specialisation, commencement of studies, date of graduation, School) being passed on to the alumni association of the University of Applied Sciences for Central Switzerland (Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts Alumni) after completion of their degree programme/continuing and executive education programme in order to take out their free-of-charge one-year membership. If students do not wish for their personal data to be disclosed to the alumni association for the purpose of taking out a free-of-charge one-year membership, they may notify the association office via e-mail (info@alumnihslu.ch).
- Services provided by third parties
By using third-party services, e.g. Mobility car sharing, University Sports, etc., students consent to the Lucerne School of Design Film Art processing their details for the purpose of administering these services. The relevant information is forwarded to third parties only if expressly shared by the students and for the purpose of registration only. However, the possibility of external parties intercepting the transmission of personal data cannot be ruled out.
Legal basis
The degree program conforms to the applicable regulations in place at the start of a given degree program. We expressly reserve the right to make changes and/or amendments to existing regulations and to issue new regulations during the degree program. These shall apply for all students as soon as they come into effect. The regulations can be read online at any time and are available on request from the Lucerne School of Design Film Art.
