Overview
Dental examination is key for dental diagnosis, treatment planning and reevaluation of performed treatments. Most dental clinicians record their observations with a dental chart either on paper or with an electronic charting tool.
Derec is a GDPR-compliant dental charting web-app that enables dentists to precisely document dental conditions with an extensive feature set including periodontal status, restorations and pathologies. The platform also lets dentists keep track of past interventions, treatment decisions i.e., the comprehensive dental history of a patient.
The main drawback faced by clinicians is the initial investment required to fully document a patient’s condition. A thorough dental examination can be time consuming if e.g., the patient has numerous dental restorations and/or pathologies. In addition, it is relatively unpleasant for the patient. Due to these constraints, this initial documentation is often limited in practice.
Solving this challenge would tremendously increase the value of data collected with Derec both from the dental research and business perspectives as it would enable the development of decision support tools for diagnosis and treatment recommendations.
We aim to evaluate the feasibility of automatically extracting dental information from 2D dental x-rays using machine learning. The extracted information will then be used to automatically pre-fill Derec’s patient records after manual validations by the dentist.
