Overview
The project Gessner@Silk Memory is part of a larger silk research cluster at the Competence Centre Products & Textiles at Lucerne University. All projects in this cluster concern themselves with the assessment and documentation of the Zurich silk industry.
The aim of Gessner@Silk Memory is the systematic sighting and selection of textile and visual material from the large corporate and textile archives of the Gessner weaving mill at Wädenswil. Sources are being catalogued and stored in the design database Silk Memory and the image database Silk Images.
The textile patterns are selected from Gessner’s furnishing department, an area of production previously lacking in the Silk Memory database.
Another aim of the project is to evaluate and specify selection criteria for visual sources in order to establish a working routine and lay down rules for their electronic storing and cataloguing.
A key research question concerns the simultaneous integration of information about textile patterns, production details and visual material in a database that can be accessed online.
