Overview
In recent decades, the consumption of living spaces has risen in Switzerland. This trend is driven by a number of demographic and social factors. The way apartments are laid out affects their use, their price and their land usage, as well as influencing the socioeconomic structure of populations in settlement areas. Official statistics record a property’s total floor space, but not its footprint and layout. The project «Apartment layouts and living space consumption» attempts to build a scientific bridge, by illustrating the relationship between the densification efforts in construction and the consumption of living space from the point of view of layout-design, and by proposing new forward-looking strategies for dealing with Switzerland’s scarcity of land.
