Arbeitsbewilligungen

International employees need a valid work permit to work at the HSLU.

For information about residency, work and cross-border commuter permits, people from EU/EFTA states may consult the fact sheets supplied by the Canton of Lucerne.

Rotkruez-based employees may obtain the relevant information for the Canton of Zug from the Canton’s Office for Migration.

People who stay in the canton for 90 workdays or less per year are obliged to register according to the Canton of Lucerne’s registration procedure.

People from non-EFTA/EU states (including UK nationals) can find useful information on the fact sheet supplied by the Canton of Lucerne.

Taxes

Useful information about Switzerland’s tax system is available on the website of the Federal Tax Administration.

Employees with a tax domicile abroad or without a C permit are liable to withholding tax. Withholding tax is deducted directly from the employee’s salary.

Insurance

Pension fund

Contributions to a pension scheme is compulsory for employees whose annual income exceeds a certain amount. Employees of the HSLU are insured with the Lucerne Pension Fund LUPK. The School of Music has a separate contract with the Gemini collective foundation.

Health insurance

Health insurance is compulsory for all people living in Switzerland. It must be taken out no later than three months after relocating to Switzerland. Basic insurance is available from a range of providers. It pays to compare the different plans on comparis.ch.

Workplace accidents

Employees are insured against accidents at the workplace through the HSLU. If their contractual hours per week exceed eight hours, coverage also extends to non-occupational accidents.

Other insurances

Old Age and Survivors’ Insurance (OASI) and Disability Insurance (DI) are compulsory for people who live or work in Switzerland. They are automatically insured—in the case of the HSLU with the Lucerne Compensation Office.
