Music and Art Performance Workshops Academy for contemporary Music 

These workshops are open to students of the Lucerne School of Music Master program Music and Art Performance as well as to all other interested instrumentalists, singers and composers. The workshops will be led by four prominent figures in the performing arts.

  • Montag, 10.02.2025: Benoît Renaudin | Installation and Sound Creation
    This workshop is dedicated to the construction and spatial arrangement of a temporary sound installation as well as the performance of this object. Designed as a creative experience, the workshop will invite students to immerse themselves in a highly spatial and visual approach to sound creation. Through sharing his practice, which blends musical instrument creation and installation, Benoît Renaudin aims to explore with the students the construction of a monumental sound object based on the principles of bagpipes and recorders, hacking their principles with the help of an external design of breathing balloons, tubes and modular elements.
    They will have to build an instrument using the materials provided by Benoît Renaudin, identify a suitable location, and perform as a group.

  • Tuesday, 11.02.2025: Jessie Marino | Workshop on Noticing
    This workshop aims to expand our sensorial limits and take special notice of the unremarkable, the everyday, the mundane. What we normally take for granted can, indeed, become points of fascination and inspiration, if we are able to conjure a sense of wonder through the act of noticing. 
    We will listen, watch, look inward, listen outward, look up and then up again, treasuring our surroundings and taking note on how differently we perceive from person to person, moment to moment, sight to sound to smell.

  • Wednesday, 12.02.2025: Svetlana Maraš | Sketching and prototyping as a way of composing in Experimental music and Sound art
    For those working in sound art, installation art, and experimental music, there are no universal tools available in the early stages of the process to handle the diverse materials a work might consist of. When the material extends beyond sound as an auditory fact, to include physical objects, space, interaction, movement, text, and more, the question emerges: how do we bridge the gap between the initial, abstract idea of the piece and the beginning of its realization? What tools can assist in developing the form and structure of such a piece?
    During the workshop, we will explore how sketching and prototyping can help us refine materials of the piece and shape them until they reach a satisfactory state. By adopting this approach and allowing time to the processes of sketching and prototyping, the goal is to push the materials to their limits before settling on a final form, while avoiding compromises with the idea due to a lack of ready-made solutions for working with it. We will engage in the sketching and prototyping of experimental musical instruments, installations, performances, interactive installations, and potentially other, as-yet-unknown formats.

  • Thursday, 13.02.2025: Stanislas Pili | Sound explorations - creative ways of using microphones and amplification
    The participants will work on music instruments and objects applying an experimental approach in the use of amplification. 
    Microphones are usually utilized as tools to realistically record and amplify an instrument. However, thanks to the amplification, it is possible to realize electronic timbres, dynamic variations, micro noises and to spatialize sounds without necessarily using live electronics and digital software. 
    In addition to conventional microphones, hydrophones, seismophones and contact mics will be examined. Original approaches in the sound diffusion techniques will also be presented, such as analog solutions to design the spatialization and the application of devices like transducers, bass shakers, woofers and ultrasonic speakers.
    Participants will discover solutions for a creative employment of amplification in the fields of music performance, electroacoustic composition, music theatre and sound art. 
  • Friday, 14.02.2025: Debriefing and round table with João Carlos Pacheco and Gilles Grimaître
