Admission requirements What conditions you must fulfil

We are pleased that you are interested in studying with us. General requirements as well as a successful entrance examination are linked to admission to a music degree programme.

The following admission requirements apply to studies at the Lucerne School of Music:

Bachelor's programme

Requirements
  • a recognised vocational baccalaureate or
  • a recognised general baccalaureate, or
  • a recognised specialist baccalaureate qualification in the field of music and theatre or
  • the completion of a recognised three-year course of study either at a Swiss commercial school or a Swiss upper secondary specialised school, or
  • the completion of another recognised equivalent general education course at upper secondary level, or
  • evidence of an equivalent general education acquired elsewhere
Admission exam
  • passing the entrance examination, which consists of a theoretical and a practical part
Language skills
  • Proficiency in the German language (level B2 or above. For Bachelor of Arts/Music and Movement: level C1)

Exceptions

In exceptional cases, a completed upper secondary education may be waived if there is an exceptional artistic talent («sur dossier admission»).

Admission to a higher semester

Entry into a higher semester is possible if, in addition to the above-mentioned criteria, proof of relevant study achievements elsewhere at a conservatoire or at a comparable educational institution is provided.

Master's programme

Requirements
  • a Bachelor's degree from the Lucerne School of Music with attendance of the preparatory module assigned to the respective Master's programme and the qualifications required for the respective major
  • a Bachelor’s degree from a music conservatory or comparable educational establishment and completion of the admission procedure
Language skills
  • proficiency in the German language (level B1 or above)
    • Exceptions:
      • B2 level: Major Instrumental/Vocal Pedagogy
      • C1 Level: Major Music Research, Major Music Theory and School Music II
  • proficiency in English (level C1) for Major Artistic Research

Exceptions
  • For the major Music and Digital Creation, a Bachelor's degree obtained at a university of applied sciences (sur-dossier admission) is sufficient – regardless of the degree programme.

Doctorate (in cooperation with foreign conservatoires)

Requirements
  • a Master's degree in the musical-artistic or in the music-pedagogical or in the music-related scientific field.
  • proof of research skills
Language skills
  • mastery of the German language (B1 level)
  • mastery of another language, primarily English, French or Italian (C1 level)
