Hub Working, learning and teaching in physical and virtual spaces

The Hub creates space for new and additional opportunities to work, study and teach - alone, in pairs and as a group. Variously equipped and flexibly furnished spaces foster communal discovery, creation, experimentation and exploration. The services range of media offered are tailored to the needs of the School.

Knowledge-sharing and networking

Support for research, citation and copyright

You can get professional support in your search for relevant information and media (both physical and digital) and in answering questions around assessing sources, copyright and citation in academic writing.

Hardware and software support

Support for specialist music software (music notation and audio processing software, apps) and for the use of equipment such as controllers, microphones and audio interfaces. Professionals and power users will be there to help.

Coffee Lectures

Exciting topics, presented in a compact form by specialists: our Coffee Lectures take place every two weeks, adhering to the format of ten minutes of input, five minutes of questions and a cup of coffee.

MusicTalks

Experts share their knowledge and experience in the “MusicTalks” series. In presentations, discussions and conversations, they inspire contemplation on the subject of music, open up new listening perspectives and provide background information about events in the field of music.

News Lounge

In the News Lounge on the third floor, you will find printed newspapers and magazines.  It is a perfect space for brief, informal exchanges, for spontaneous meetings or to retreat to with a relaxing cup of coffee.

Display window / screens

Research insights, surprising facts, intriguing questions and food for thought as well as news from the library: find what’s new in music on the screens dotted around the library and MusicLab area.

Creating and discovering

Apps, hardware and software, technical equipment

In the MusicLab, you will be able to work with professional music software or use a video editing power station. It features current music apps and cutting-edge technical equipment for music recording and production.

Workshop

The workshop is designed as a place of work and experimentation where you can find tools for minor repairs of musical instruments and amplifiers. It is equipped with an oscilloscope to measure electronic waves and vibration, a soldering station and two tube-building machines for double reed instruments.

Specialist literature, music magazines and reference books are available both digitally and in print.

Specialist databases

From the online Jazz discography to SightreadingFactory to Swissdox, you can access our sophisticated electronic resources for studying and teaching through the library.

Musical scores

Retrieve digital or printed musical scores from all eras and styles from our well-stocked music library, including urtext editions, critical complete editions, Real Books, digital musical scores (Henle library, Nkoda; IMSLP Premium, Classical Scores Online).

From video streaming to vinyl

Top-quality sound and image recordings: the music library offers access to a broad range of physical recording mediums (vinyl, CDs) as well as to electronic services such as the digital concert hall or the Moods archive.

Collaboration

Co-working Space in the MusicLab

Flexible furniture (desks, chairs, partition walls) may be moved around and grouped as needed for work in pairs, in groups, or for instruction sequences. Additional infrastructure includes a mobile touch screen and an E-Piano.

HörRaum and HörBar

Enjoy music and concert videos in perfect sound and image quality - no matter if alone or in groups, the comfortable HörRaum is the ideal place to do it. 
Its companion space is the HörBar, where you can go to listen to music (on headphones during the day) or have an informal chat.

Media lending

Available media resources

Browse the library catalogue (swisscovery) and use it for research on site; self-lending and the possibility to return media at other libraries make it easy and convenient to lend books and other media. The courier service will bring any resources you lend to your location of choice on the same day.

Technical equipment from the MusicLab

Mic stands, cables, adapters and other equipment are available for self-lending on the third floor - devices that require a monthly loan can be requested via the MusicLab.
