Space exploration on distant planets and unmanned missions outside our solar system require the production of new components and spacecraft far from Earth. The Bioscience and Medical Engineering competence center focuses on the manufacture of various biological products using the latest technologies in the field of bioreactors, light systems and fluidics.
The Algae Group in the Biomedical Science and Engineering Competence Center focuses on the development and operation of microbial bioreactor systems using the latest technologies in the fields of membranes, lighting systems and fluidics. The objective is to operate these bioreactors as microbial factories. On Earth, these microbial factories can produce chemicals to manufacture bioproducts that replace less sustainable materials, for example materials derived from fossil fuels. On space stations, these systems can provide the necessary amounts of raw materials to manufacture products for life support, infrastructure and food/health additives that will facilitate the exploration of distant planets. Whether on Earth or on Moon and Mars, microbial factories can promote more sustainable bioproducts.
