Major Tourism & Hospitality Management
What is true for the country as a whole is a way of life in Lucerne. Located in the heart of the Swiss Alps, this city is a hub of international tourism and is considered a role model for many other destinations.
The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a Major in Tourism & Hospitality Management qualifies for a wide range of employment opportunities and prepares students for an international career in tourism. The programme is brand new and has been designed to include a wide range of tourism-related topics, such as tour operating, airlines, hotel and hospitality management, wellness, sports and destination management. Students also have the opportunity to acquire a good understanding of product development and product management in tourism, of e-commerce, digital transformation, event management, consumer behaviour, trends and innovation.
Courses enable students to develop professional skills relevant to working in tourism such as communication, sales, negotiations, entrepreneurship and leadership. The programme design has been kept deliberately flexible to allow for studies to be combined with work, or for the integration of internships, or for exchange semesters at one of our international partner universities.
Programme Qualifications
Graduates of our tourism bachelor programme obtain a relevant education, which qualifies them for a wide range of employment opportunities. While popular graduate career paths typically include working in a leading position in the management of destinations or of tourist associations, this is only part of the story: the fact that our graduates‘ expertise in tourism is solidly anchored in the principles of business administration equips them with the prerequisites for exciting employment opportunities in many areas outside tourism.
Programme Characteristics
- The programme is taught by experienced lecturers with significant past and current industry involvement (for example, three of our lecturers were former tourism business and destination directors )
- The Institute of Tourism is a place of active research and continuously and consistently enriches our courses in a variety of ways: not only are new research findings incorporated into our general teaching, but students are also presented with the latest challenges and opportunities that the tourism industry may face.
- The tourism and hospitality industry is a classical service sector, so people working there require excellent communication skills. Our programme serves that need with a significant focus on successful communication as well as on contemporary marketing techniques and know-how.
Professional Internship Programme – Where Education Meets Industry
Since January 2007 the Tourism programme, in cooperation with the University’s Career Services, has provided a professional internship opportunity for students. Selected students with good German skills at least at level B2 are thereby enabled to work in an enterprise that acts as a „mentor“ during a specified period of time. This has proved for participants to be a highly valuable learning experience in a professional environment.
