Goals and contents
The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a Major in Hospitality Management (short: Bachelor in Hospitality Management) is composed of carefully selected modules from the Bachelor in Business Administration of the Lucerne School of Business (LSB). This guarantees that the goals and objectives are in line with the requirements of the labour market and meet high standards of quality. On the other hand, and as a result of the collaboration with SHL Schweizerische Hotelfachschule Luzern, this concept allows a tailor-made response to the needs and concerns of the target group, the future leaders in the hospitality business.
Students in this programme will earn a diploma from SHL (equivalent to 90 ECTS credits) which they use to ladder into the LSB part of the programme. Completing the SHL diploma as well as all LSB modules is a graduation requirement of the programme.
The programme
Semester one (SHL) lays the foundations: Students familiarize themselves with the fascinating world of a hotelier. Through a combination of practical experience and theory in F&B, they internalize the attitude of hospitality professionals in both thought and action.
The first industry internship follows in the second semester. Students get the chance to put the supervised work experience from the first semester to the test of a real-world environment.
In semester three (SHL), the focus lies on Rooms Division. Along with Front Office and Housekeeping, this semester covers the environmental impact and financial aspects of managing the core departments of a hotel.
Semester four features the second industry experience. Students can apply their skills at a higher level of responsibility in any of the areas related to Rooms Division.
The following two semesters (LSB and SHL) focus on Business Administration and Hospitality Management, with the emphasis on how to generate and maintain financial stability through strong leadership. In the final two semesters (LSB), management and entrepreneurship as well as finance and economics are studied in depth and are supplemented by academic research methods, mathematics and statistics, communication and intercultural competence. Students acquire the full range of skills necessary for conducting business at an international level. In addition, they will demonstrate their understanding of the topics covered throughout the programme by writing an individual bachelor thesis.

Universities of Applied Sciences – interface between science and profession
The short-term professional qualification of our graduates builds on a strong and consistent real-world business orientation during their training. This means that they are empowered to meet the requirements of demanding and challenging jobs from day one after graduation. A fact that is much appreciated by employers, companies and organizations.
The dimensions of practical relevance are many: stakeholders from business and society are closely involved in curriculum development; graduate feedback is systematically collected, analysed and used to improve programmes. Extensive personal industry experience is an admission requirement for students and a recruiting requirement for lecturers. Moreover, there are regular guest lectures featuring competent speakers from national and international corporations. Student assignments include problem-solving activities mandated by companies and organizations. The students themselves benefit from a wide range of University services such as a Careers Service and Mentoring Programmes.
On the other hand, a thorough understanding of programme-related science and theory is an indispensable component of higher education at university level. A sound theoretical background provides meaning, orientation and purpose in unknown, unstructured and complex situations. It helps identify underlying patterns and dependencies. We consider theory and science as the foundations for long-term professional fitness.
