“Playlist for Parkinson’s LIVE!” is a free public talk and concert event. It is designed to present the results of the ongoing SNSF research project and Parkinson Schweiz project: “Music, Movement, Mood & Parkinson’s”. The projects revolve around the question of how music can help people with Parkinson's in their everyday lives. The concert will be performed by students of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU).
The event will include a public talk by the researchers involved in the project, in which they will present the results of a survey on the use of music by people with Parkinson's in Switzerland and explain how they have developed a new music and movement course called "Songlines for Parkinson's". People with Parkinson's as well as medical professionals and various therapists from Lucerne, London and Brissago were involved in the development of the course. The lecture will be followed by a roundtable in which these specialist members of the team will discuss how this type of participatory medicine has been implemented. A question-and-answer session with the audience is planned afterwards.
The concert programme that follows will reflect the music that is of special importance to the people with Parkinson's who were interviewed in the survey. The programme includes a variety of musical genres, showing the wide range of music that people with Parkinson's use in different situations.
The main aim is to give a voice to those affected and to raise awareness of the ways in which music can be used to help those living with Parkinson's disease.
In addition, the research team will present their new laboratory, demonstrating their use of cutting-edge technology combining motion capture and a pressure-sensitive gait mat to record activities simultaneously in 4-dimensions. This new method will lead the way in scientific measurements helping us understand changes in quality of movement. Overall, this project demonstrates the importance of the arts in relation to health and showcases the contribution applied sciences and arts universities can make in direct connection with our communities.
We would like to thank SEMPRE's Arnold Bentley New Initiatives Fund, Parkinson Schweiz and the Swiss National Science Foundation for co-funding and supporting this novel event designed to disseminate research results in the playful form of a concert.
