Discover Vienna
while earning a master’s degree in Software Engineering at the FH Technikum Wien.
Our partner university, the FH Technikum Wien (FHTW) in Austria, is an accredited public university-level institution in Vienna. The FHTW is Austria’s university of applied sciences for engineering and digitalization. More than 4,500 students currently train as top industry talent in 28 bachelor’s and master’s programs. The campus is situated on Höchstädtplatz in the center of Vienna.
Students have the opportunity to obtain two coordiated degrees, one of which is awarded by the partner institution in Austria. Students attend the first study year at the Lucerne School of Computer Science and Information Technology in Rotkreuz and spend their third and, if they so wish, the forth semester, at the FHTW. The FHTW recognizes 60 ECTS previously earned at the Lucerne School of Computer Science and Information Technology. Students attend advanced modules and write their master’s thesis at the FHTW. The ECTS credits earned at the FHTW are in turn recognized by the HSLU. The master's thesis must be on a topic with a sustainability angle. It will be co-supervised by both partner institutions.
Courses from the MSc in Software Engineering and the MSc in Business Information Technology programs. The choice of courses will be personally discussed with the students. The FHTW has many students in the work-study track, which is why courses often take place in the evenings.
Students write their master's thesis in the spring semester. However, they will already begin exploring topics and start preparations in the fall semester. The topic as well as the main and co-supervisor will be chosen in consultation with both institutions. The MSc thesis will be supervised and marked by both partner institutions. The master's thesis must be presented and defended in front of a panel comprising representatives of both institutions. Students are not required to physically stay abroad at the guest university while developing their master's thesis, unless the topic requires their presence (e.g., use of a lab) or one of their courses in the spring semester is an in-person event.
The winter semester starts at the beginning of September and ends at the end of January. The summer semester starts in mid-February and ends in mid-July.
