Die Vorteile von Pflanzen an Fassaden sind vielfach belegt. So hat das Grün in einer Stadt nicht nur für die Bewohner psychologische Vorteile, auch Insekten erfreuen sich daran. So tragen bewachsene Fassaden zur Artenvielfalt bei. Bewachsene Fassaden binden Umweltpartikel an den Blättern und waschen sich beim nächsten Regen ab. So reinigen Pflanzen die Umwelt und tragen zur guten Luftqualität bei. Verdichtetes Bauen führt dazu, dass sich urbane Zentren in Hitzeperioden aufheizen und durch die thermische Speicherung der Energie in Fassadenflächen und Strassenbelägen die Nachtauskühlung keine Wirkung zeigt. So erwärmen sich urbane Zentren viel mehr auf als ländliche Wohngebiete. Pflanzen verdunsten Wasser mit Hilfe der Umgebungswärme und verhindern damit die Überhitzung der urbanen Zentren. Eine Regenwasserbewirtschaftung für die Fassadenbewässerung mindert bei Starkregen die Hochwassergefahr durch Entlastung der Kanalisation.
Seilfassaden sind verschiedenen Einwirkungen ausgesetzt: Eigengewichte der Pflanzen, Bewuchskräfte aus umschlingen der Rankhilfe und Kräfte aus der Windströmung. Eine geeignete Rankhilfe für bodengebundene Begrünungen sind abgespannte Seilkonstruktionen. Pflanzen sind adaptiv und passen sich der wirkenden Windströmung an, indem sie grossen Windgeschwindigkeiten ihre Fläche, d.h. ihre Zweige und Blätter in der Windrichtung ausrichten.
Am Kompetenzzentrum Gebäudehülle des Instituts Bauingenieurwesen werden aktuell die Einwirkungskräfte auf bewachsene Seilfassaden mit Versuchen erforscht. Tests im Windkanal wurden bis zu einer maximalen Windgeschwindigkeit von 31 m/s (110 km/h) durchgeführt.
