International Winter School on Event and Destination Management Welcome to Prague and Lucerne, 29 January - 9 February 2018

The University of Economics, Prague (VSE), Czech Republic and the Lucerne School of Business (LSoB), Switzerland offer a two-week Winter School programme which takes the participants from one internationally recognised tourist location to another.

Both Prague and Lucerne are beautiful, historic, and romantic locations and attract millions of tourists every year.

Both universities are recognised for the quality of their Tourism and Marketing departments and offer participants valuable insights into the field of event and destination management. The first week in Prague is dedicated to Event Management. It aims to provide students with the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills necessary to organize various congresses, conferences, sports and other events. The second week in Lucerne features Destination Management. It introduces participants to the complexity of tourism destinations, the mutual dependence of various service providers involved and the development of tourism destinations.

The programme is complemented with company visits, excursions to tourist attractions and social activities. The week in Prague is worth 4 ECTS-credits, the week in Lucerne 3 ECTS-credits.

Participants can either sign up for both weeks or just one of the two. The distance from Prague to Lucerne is approximately 750 km. The suggested means of transportation are train, bus or plane. Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements.

Our programme addresses bachelor's and master's students interested in the respective fields. The working language of the week is English.

Event Management at the University of Economics, Prague (VSE), Czech Republic, 29 January - 2 February 2018: The Events Industry with a focus on Sports Event Management

  • Day 1: Events Industry (basic introduction, terms & definitions), Site Inspection of Prague Congress Centre
  • Day 2: Purpose of Convention Associations, Convention Bureaus, Corporate Event Management
  • Day 3: Mega and Sports Event Management (basic introduction), Marketing of Sports Events
  • Day 4: Financing of Sports Events, Site Inspection of International Ice Hockey Federation
  • Day 5: Management of Conference Facilities, Site Inspection of Hotel Conference Facilities

Destination Management at the Lucerne School of Business, Switzerland, 5 - 9 February 2018:

  • Day 1: Destination Management I, Destination Management II
  • Day 2: Destination Management Simulation I, Destination Management Simulation II
  • Day 3: Destination Management Simulation III, Destination Management Simulation IV
  • Day 4: Sustainability - National and International Business Cases I, Sustainable Tourism Destination Case Study
  • Day 5: Sustainability - National and International Business Cases II, Excursion to the Bürgenstock

Fees

  • Fees for students of partner institutions of the University of Economics, Prague (VSE) or the Lucerne School of Business for one week: CZK 33,000
  • Fees for students of partner institutions of the University of Economics, Prague (VSE) or the Lucerne School of Business for both weeks: CZK 66,000
  • Fees for students of non-partner institutions for one week: CZK 37,000
  • Fees for students of non-partner institutions for both weeks: CZK 74,000

Requirements

Bachelor's and master's students who wish to apply for the winter weeks need to fulfil the following criteria:

  • They need to have completed a minimum of one semester of university-level study at bachelor's or master's respectively (confirmation of enrolment). 
  • The working language of the weeks is English. It is advisory that the student's English language level is IELTS 6 or equivalent.

If participants wish to transfer the credits they earn during their time in Prague and/or Lucerne to their home institution, they should obtain approval for credit transfer prior to submission of their application. 

Accommodation

Participants are responsible for booking their own accommodation. However, in Lucerne a few rooms have been reserved for participating students and can be secured by filling in the relevant part of the application form. Please find some suggestions below:

Rates for accommodation reserved through the Lucerne School of Business:

  • Single room without shower: CHF 69.00/person/night
  • Double room without shower: CHF 54.00/person/night
  • Double room with shower: CHF 64.00/person/night

Grading

The grading will be done by the University of Economics, Prague (VSE) and the Lucerne School of Business separately. Participants can achieve 4 ECTS for their week in Prague and 3 ECTS for their week in Lucerne. The grading will be done according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System.

The Lucerne School of Business assesses and grades the performance of the participants in accordance with Chapter V "Module Assessment and ECTS credits" of the "Academic Regulations for the Bachelor Programme in International Business Administration at the Lucerne School of Business".

University of Economics, Prague (VSE)

The University of Economics, Prague (VSE) is the biggest public university specialising in Economics in the Czech Republic, with a tradition spanning more than 60 years. Application Form

Please send your signed application together with a Confirmation of Enrolement from your home university to international.business@hslu.ch. Once we have received your application, we will send you an invoice for registration (CZK 3,000) and an invoice for your fees. You are kindly asked to pay the invoice for registration upon receipt. After having processed your application, we will send you a Letter of Acceptance whereupon you need to pay the invoice for your fees (minus CZK 3,000). You might need your Letter of Acceptance for your visa application. Please bear in mind that it might take a couple of months to get your visa.

What you have to organize yourself

The International Winter School on Event and Destination Management cannot guarantee the following:

  • Visa (in most cases, for Non-EU-citizens a tourist visa should be enough; please see Terms and Conditions for details) 
  • Housing 
  • Insurances
  • Travel arrangements 

Participants are, in the end, responsible for organising the above requirements for themselves.
